Wilkerson Row Handcrafted Furniture by Shaun Wilkerson
Born and raised in New Orleans Louisiana, Shaun Wilkerson worked as a trim carpenter for the local carpenters union in the late 70s. He opened his first business, Plantation Mantels in mid-city New Orleans in September 1988. Specializing in mantel designs based on southern plantations and 19th century New Orleans shotgun houses, he soon expanded his repertoire to include include beds, tables, & armoires, all featuring reclaimed cypress and distinct New Orleans styling. His connection and affection for his home city have truly manifested into his unique furniture creations. In 1991 he opened Wilkerson Row on Magazine street in the historic Garden District of New Orleans where his custom furniture designs were soon being sought after by local celebrities, music and film stars. "I used to be a bit of a name dropper earlier in my career" Shaun says, "but I've reached a point where I just don't understand why a piece of furniture I've made for a senator or movie star is more important than the piece I made for the newly married couple who've come in numerous times contemplating their first major purchase. They'll cherish my work. They honor me. Shaun has won numerous Alpha Awards for furniture design and was recently chosen as a furniture design master by New Orleans Homes and Lifestyles. He continues to evolve as a furniture designer and craftsman and looks forward to introducing his new collections, the "Barn Door" Collection which highlights barn doors on sliding iron hardware, and his "Indigenous" Collection based on 18th and 19th century furniture designs originally crafted by slaves and Free Men of Color. "I make a pretty mean barbecued shrimp too" Shaun says. "Do good work – that matters" SW
